They also help people heal from emotional trauma. In addition, animals can help improve the quality of life. Here are some stories of three remarkable animals helping people in need. Binti Jua is a female gorilla that lives in a zoo in Chicago. She became well known for rescuing a boy in danger. In 1996, a three-year-old boy climbed over the barrier and accidentally fell into the gorilla's pen. He broke his hand and became unconscious. While zoo visitors watched and screamed, Binti did a great thing. She picked up the child and cradled him with her arm. Then, she protected him from other animals until zookeepers came to rescue him. The boy owes his life to Binti's kindness! There was a four-year-old boy named Richard who lived with autism. His mother had suddenly died when he was a baby. He had serious emotional trauma and had a difficult time communicating with other people. Then one day, he got a black and white tuxedo cat named Clover. Clover helped Richard make a big change in his life. He started to have conversations with the cat when no one was around. What Richard had really needed was someone who listened to him with patience. Clover comforted him and became a faithful friend. Playing with the cat helped Richard become better at communicating with other people. Ned Sullivan's life changed when he had a serious car accident at the age of twenty-one. The accident paralyzed him below the neck. He had a hard time doing everyday tasks at home and also felt lonely. Finally, he and his family adopted a monkey named Kasey. Then Sullivan's life changed again, this time for the better. Kasey was actually a monkey trained to help the disabled. Kasey now does everything for Sullivan. She turn soff the lights, and flips the pages of books. Also, she helps him eat food using a spoon and bowl. Sullivan says, "Kasey's help is so valuable. Kasey is like a best friend I can't live without." |
