Keisha Castle-Hughes was born in 1990 in Australia, but she grew up in New Zealand. When she was eleven, she starred in the film Whale Rider. She was nominated for an Oscar - amazing for such a young girl who had never acted before!
The film is based on a book by the New Zealand writer, Witi Ihimaera. Keisha hadn't read the book before she started filming, but when she read it, she loved it. It's about a young girl who swims with a whale, although when Keisha got the part, she had never had swimming lessons and couldn't swim at all.
Before Whale Rider, Keisha had always dreamt of being an actress, but it was only a dream. That changed one day when she was having an English lesson at school. A director was visiting schools and looking for a girl to take the main part in the film. Keisha was laughing with her friends at the back of the class - and she was perfect!
After Whale Rider, Keisha went on to play the part of the Queen of Naboo in Star Wars: Episode III. Look out for her - she's certainly a star!
