Read the following passage and choose the correct answer for questions below.
The populations of many countries include not only the people who are native
inhabitants (cư dân), but also immigrants from other countries. For example, the United
States is often called a “Nation of Immigrants” since so many people have left their home
countries and settled there. The United States is not unique, however, as immigration
continues in many countries around the world. The immigration process has several steps,
the final one being official citizenship. That is, the immigrant becomes a full member of
his or her new country, with the same rights as native-born citizens. Though gaining
citizenship is often a lengthy process, it is not usually a complicated one.
[1] Take for example a person who marries a U.S. citizen and wishes to become a
citizen as well. [2] The person must first live in the United States for three consecutive
years. Once the three years have passed, the person may apply for citizenship. [3] To
complete the application, the person must give the government personal information such
as where he or she is from and how long he or she has been in the United States, as well as
how many times he or she has traveled outside the country. [4] Then the person pays a fee
and sends all of the materials to the government. When the government receives the
documents, it checks to make sure the information is accurate and complete. Next, the
government sends a notice to the applicant that it has received the application. The
applicant then must go to a government office to have his fingerprints taken. Months later,
the government will contact the person to come for a personal interview. The applicant
will be asked questions about the history of the United States, and will also take an English
exam. When the person has completed the interview he or she may become a citizen.
Finally, an official ceremony is given to celebrate this achievement.
