Amelia Mary Earhart was born in 1897 in Kansas, a state located in the Midwestern United States. She showed an early aptitude for science and sports at school. After finishing school, she worked as a nurse for the Red Cross where she got to know many of the wounded pilots and came to admire aviation. Earhart enrolled in medical studies at Columbia University, but quit after one year and soon started taking flying lessons.
