There are 2 parts of the brain that control the way we move or act. One part has to do with all things we know we are doing. The other part has to do with things that we do not realize we are doing- that is, we do without thinking. We do many things without having to think. For instance, we breathe without thinking, and our heart beats without our thinking. Then there are things we learn to do and then do so well that we need not think but do automatically, such as walking. A person who walks in his or her sleep does so without thinking. He or she usually just gets out of bed and stands up. Sometimes the person walks a little way. Sleepwalking occurs more with children than adults, and particularly those who have worries and problems. It does no harm to gently wake someone who is sleepwalking because there is always a danger that he or she may have an accident. After being awakened, the sleepwalker will not remember having stepped out of bed
