The coral reefs are made up of tiny living organisms called coral polups.Coralpolyps take calcium carbonate from the ocean water to build their hard skeletons, which form the base of the reef. Millions of polyps working together over millions of years have created this vast underwater structure. The Great Barrier Reef is a haven for a mind-boggling variety of marine life. Over 1,500 species of fish, 411 types of hard coral, 134 species of sharks and rays, and six of the world's seven species of marine turtles call the reef home. This incredible biodiversity makes the Great Barrier Reef a UNESCO World Heritage
