Esports
Esports is a competition using video games. Esports players must earn licences to be called professional gamers and compete in a competition. However, whether esports is a sport is still a matter of debate.
Many esports competitions have been broadcasted on TV since the 2000s. The best-known ones are League of Legends World Championship and Dota 2’s The International, both founded in the early 2010s. The number of esports viewers keeps increasing over the years. A report shows that over 400 million people watch esports by the late 2010s.
In 2003, esports was first recognized as a real sport in China. The 2007 Asian Indoor Games was the first big sports competition that included esports. However, outside Asia, esports didn’t get much recognition until the early 2010s when many European countries started changing their views towards it. The Olympics is considering adding esports to its 2024 event. If this happens, the world will finally recognize esports as a sport.
