Unit 10: ENERGY SOURCES
IV. SPEAKING
1. What is renewable energy?
- Renewable energy is energy that comes from natural resources which are replenished on a human timescale - such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat.
2. What is non-renewable energy?
- Non-renewable energy comes from sources that will run out or will not be replenished in our lifetimes—or even in many, many lifetimes. Most non-renewable energy sources are fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
3. What are some examples of renewable energy?
- Examples of renewable energy include solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, geothermal energy, and biomass energy.
4. What are some examples of non-renewable energy?
- Examples of non-renewable energy include coal, natural gas, oil, and nuclear energy.
5. Where does carbon dioxide emission come from?
- Carbon dioxide emissions primarily come from the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) for energy, transportation, and industrial processes. Deforestation and certain industrial processes also release CO2.
6. What are some effects of global warming?
- Some effects of global warming include rising sea levels, more frequent and intense heat waves, changes in precipitation patterns, increased frequency and intensity of natural disasters like hurricanes and droughts, and disruptions to ecosystems.
7. What can you do to reduce air pollution?
- You can reduce air pollution by using public transportation, biking, or walking instead of driving; conserving energy at home; recycling; avoiding burning leaves and trash; and supporting policies and initiatives that promote clean energy.
8. How can you save water?
- You can save water by fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, using a low-flow showerhead, and watering your lawn less frequently.
9. How can you save energy?
- You can save energy by turning off lights when you leave a room, using energy-efficient appliances, sealing air leaks in your home, and adjusting your thermostat.
10. How can you save wood for producing paper?
- You can save wood for producing paper by recycling paper, using both sides of the paper, using digital documents instead of printing, and buying products made from recycled paper.
