The table illustrates data on the underground rail networks in six major cities. Overall, the underground systems in London, Paris, and Tokyo are more extensive and serve significantly more passengers than the newer systems in W.C, Kyoto, and L.A.
The London underground is the oldest system, which started operating in 1863. It is also the largest system, with 199 kilometers of route. While only third in terms of size, the Paris system is older than the Tokyo system. Paris has a shorter route, serving approximately 144 million passengers per year.
The Tokyo system is easily the busiest, with the highest number of route kilometers at 214. It is also the most heavily used, with around 2.8 billion passengers per year.
The three newer underground systems are those in W.C, Kyoto, and L.A, with passenger figures of 50, 45, and 50 million respectively. These figures are considerably lower compared to London, Paris, and Tokyo. Of the three newer networks, the Washington DC underground is the longest with 126 kilometers of route, followed by L.A with 11 kilometers and Kyoto with ****** kilometers. (The Los Angeles network is the newest, established in 2001, while the Kyoto network is the shortest amongst the six networks with just 11km)
