The “Le Khao Le The Linh Hoang Sa” or “Feast and Commemoration Festival for Hoang Sa Soldiers” is a significant cultural event held annually in Vietnam. Firstly, the festival is organized in the second or third lunar month at the Am Linh Tu temple, a national heritage site on Ly Son Island, Quang Ngai Province. The primary purpose of this festival is to pray for the safety of the soldiers of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) naval team before they embark on their mission. Secondly, the festival also serves to honor and remember the ancestors who sacrificed their lives for the country. One of the most notable activities of the festival is the “Le Khao Le The Linh” ceremony, which involves making effigies for the soldiers. These effigies, made from sticky rice, symbolize the soldiers who will be going on the expedition. If a soldier does not return, his effigy will be used for his funeral rites. Another highlight of the festival is the boat race, known as “Tu Linh boat race”. This race is not only a form of entertainment but also a way to show respect to the gods and pray for good weather and abundant fishing. In conclusion, the “Le Khao Le The Linh Hoang Sa” festival is a unique and sacred event that reflects the cultural values and historical traditions of the Vietnamese people.
