There is no doubt that one of the chief roles of the horse in art, just as in life, is that of our servant and companion. We can have very little idea of how a horse feels in its natural state. Left to itself, it is unlikely that it would pull a plough, take a soldier through a dangerous situation in battle, or do most of the other things that have attracted painters and writers to the animal ever since the dawn of history. The horse is controlled by the wishes of its owner. When we describe it, we say it has the virtues and qualities that it has so often been praised by painters and poets. Then we must consider the horse’s own beauty, speed and strength.
