The scale and influence of the tourism industry on the world economy is enormous, so in order to develop a sustainable tourism policy economists should consider positive and negative effects of the tourism industry. The primary benefit of tourism is the profit it brings to the local area. But economists should also weigh the financial burden on the construction and maintenance of the tourism industry. Tourism development causes local communities to be squeezed by foreign corporations that provide services to tourists, which will cost local residents large profits. Although the tourism industry itself can disrupt ecosystems and the environment, on the other hand tourism can also be an incentive for economists to preserve a pristine landscape.
