Starting at the age of 14, my cousin Laura Dekker went on a journey to sail on her
own around the world. She had the help of her parents but all other people in her
country did everything they could to stop her. However, Laura completed her journey
when she was 16 years old, which made her the youngest person to ever sail around
the world on her own.
Laura was born on September 20th, in 1995, in New Zealand, during a 7-year sailing
trip by her parents. As a family, they travelled for another 5 years before returning to
Holland. At the age of 10 she bought her first boat from money that she earned by
doing all kinds of different jobs. She sailed this boat alone around Holland and the
North Sea. In May 2009 she sailed alone across England, a trip that made her want
to sail around the world. That was her biggest dream.
In 2009, she started to prepare for this trip. After many difficulties, because everybody in her country thought
she was too young for something like that, she completed her trip around the world on her boat, Guppy, on
January 21st in 2012. After finishing her world trip, Laura kept on sailing. She now lives on her boat, Guppy, at
a small place by the sea, in New Zealand, together with her husband Daniel.
