The ancient land of Sa Dec has the Khmer name Phsar Dek, there are two ways to understand it, first, it is said that Phsar Dek is the name of a goddess, the second can be understood from Phsar Dek meaning Iron Market. Historically, this is the oldest city in Dong Thap province with an age of over 300 years at the same time as Saigon. Sa Dec used to be the abandoned province of the old Sa Dec province during the French colonial period before 1956 and during the period 1966-1975 under the Republic of Vietnam. In particular, the old town of Sa Dec held the role of a masterpiece of Dong Thap province during the period 1976-1994, and then according to Decree No. 36-CP issued on April 29, 1994, the province replaced Dong Thap province. The tower moved to Cao Lanh town (today Cao Lanh city) until now.
Sa Dec became a city directly under Dong Thap province on October 14, 2013 under Resolution No. 113/NQ-CP. Sa Dec city was recognized as a grade II city on February 10, 2018.
