Firstly, a significant quantity of snow accumulates on the upper slopes of a mountain. Due to the extremely low temperatures in this high-altitude region, the snow remains intact and does not melt. As time passes, additional layers of snow continue to accumulate on top of the existing snow layer. Under the weight and pressure of the overlying snow, the lower layers gradually undergo a transformation. The snow compacts and compresses, causing it to turn into ice.

With the continuous accumulation and compaction of snow and ice, a substantial mass of ice begins to take shape. This mass is what is referred to as a glacier. The glacier forms as the layers of snow undergo further compression, causing the snowflakes to fuse together and transform into solid ice.

As the glacier continues to grow and accumulate more ice, its weight becomes substantial. The sheer weight of the glacier exerts pressure on the underlying ice and causes it to deform. This deformation, combined with the effects of gravity, initiates the slow movement of the glacier downhill. The glacier flows or slides along the surface of the mountain, following the path of least resistance.

Throughout its journey down the mountain, the glacier can undergo changes and modifications. It may erode and shape the landscape as it moves, carving out valleys and creating distinct landforms. It can also accumulate debris, rocks, and sediment, which become embedded within the ice.
