Eiffel Tower

When it comes to Paris, the first thing that often crosses people’s minds is the Eiffel Tower. Little do people know that Parisians - people living in Paris, didn’t like the tower at first. They thought a giant, modern metal structure didn’t fit into the feel of the city. A century has passed, and it now becomes a symbol of not only Paris but France.

The structure wasn’t originally designed and built to be a tourist attraction as it is today. The construction started in 1887 so that it could be ready for the 1889 World’s Fair. It took two years two months and five days to complete, just in time for the Fair.

The tower was named after an engineer called Gustave Eiffel. He was the owner of the company that designed and built it. Though Gustave Eiffel took the credit, the idea was from one of his employees. Eiffel Tower also has a French nickname called “La dame de fer”, which means the iron lady.
