Exercise  4: Rewriting

1. Sam lost his job because he was lazy.     -> Sam was so lazy that he lost his job.

2. I couldn’t buy the house because it was expensive.   -> The house was too expensive for me to buy.

3. The book was so interesting that I couldn’t put it down.   -> It was so interesting that I couldn’t put it down.

4. There was too much noise, so we couldn’t hear the speech.   -> There was so much noise that we couldn’t hear the speech.

5. The house was too small to live in comfortably.    -> The house wasn’t big enough to live in comfortably.

6. Despite the cold weather, we all went for a walk.   -> Although it was cold, we all went for a walk.

7. John has done well in French, but not so well in Math.   -> While John has done well in French, he has not done so well in Math.

8. It was raining, but I went swimming anyway.    -> In spite of the rain, I went swimming anyway.

9. Ann felt ill, but insisted on going to work.   -> Despite feeling ill, Ann insisted on going to work.

10. We expected Larry to accept the job, but he didn’t.   -> Even though we expected Larry to accept the job, he didn’t.

11. I rang the doorbell. Nobody answered, though.   -> Although I rang the doorbell, nobody answered.

12. Sue went shopping so she could buy herself a new television.   -> To buy herself a new television, Sue went shopping.

13. You use it to open a wine bottle.   -> For opening a wine bottle, you use it.

14. I put it in the fridge because I want it to get cold.   -> So that it gets cold, I put it in the fridge.

15. He left early because he didn’t want to miss the bus.   -> So as not to miss the bus, he left early.

16. I saved up some money to buy a motorbike.   -> Could I buy a motorbike because I saved up some money?

17. Jane gave up smoking because she wanted to save money.   -> Order to save money, Jane gave up smoking.

18. I came here so that I could see you.   -> To see you, I came here.
