Singapore has had a long history as a green city. In 1967, Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew introduced his 'garden city' vision to transform the island-state into a lush, green and clean city. Through the years, Singapore has shaped this dream by planting trees and designing parks that reduce air pollution and enhance liveability. Singapore became a soaring priority in the country in the last decade. In early 2021, the Government of Singapore announced a bold plan of building the avant-garde eco-smart city of Tengah, the western region of the island, which will be home to five residential districts and a total of 42,000 houses spread out over 700 hectares of land. Singapore has proven to have the potential to be a worldwide leader in sustainability. With technological advancements, green strategies applied across all main sectors, it has repeatedly earned its reputation as one of the world's greenest, smartest and most sustainable cities."
