Maggie
Maggie is from Shanghai and moved to live in a village near York. The village life is wonderful. There is a great sense of community. Neighbours often greet each other in the street and the post office is the main place of contact. It’s more relaxed and you can tell who has money and who hasn’t. The residents of my village are hardly multicultural, and they seem so friendly. Even if local people are curious about my background, so far no one has said anything. English people don’t ask personal questions, they go around the room to meet the sun. Children, however, are much more direct.

Claudia
Claudia is working in East Asia, moved to live in England. It’s more difficult to live in the countryside because I have to adapt to the culture and life style. I miss living in a city close to the facilities. For internationals who are used to live like me, living in England can feel like a huge disappointment. There aren’t many facilities as in the city, and communication is well-developed. It can also be harder to find communities that have similar interests.
