Vietnam is the country with many beautiful festivals. There are hundreds of festivals each year. Besides the Tet Holiday, the Mid-Autumn festival is one of the most famous festivals and it is a traditional celebration for Vietnamese children.

The Mid-Autumn festival dates back to the Rice Civilization of the Red River delta, over 4,000 years ago. It is fantastic and charming with its history. It is held on the 15thday on the 8thlunar month (often in late September or early October) in the middle of autumn and it is celebrated for a whole day. On this day, the adults and the parents prepare many different foods - Moon cakes, candies, biscuits, jellies, and fruit, such as grapefruit, longan fruit, bananas, apples, mango, etc. All of them are designed with fun symbols, for example: dog, cat, mouse …

Moon cakes are the specific cakes and are only on this festival. Moon cake, which is made from flavour, meat, egg, dried fruit, pumpkin’s seed, peanut, is so sweet and good tasting. Everyone sounds “How delicious Moon cakes are!” after tasting them and can’t say no with them. Moon cakes symbolise Luck, Happiness, Health and Wealth on the Mid-Autumn day.
Besides that, the children are provided with many nice lanterns - star lanterns, flower lanterns and diverse funny masks such as clown mask, lion mask, prince or princess mask for the special performance in the evening of the full moon. Everywhere is fallen in the active and colourful air. The main point of the Mid-Autumn is that children use the beautiful lanterns, wear funny masks, perform fantastic lion dances, sing folklore songs in the house’s grounds or in the streets when the moon is rising. It is really an exciting show.

The Mid-Autumn celebration is an opportunity for members of the family to visit together and share together everything in their year. The young generation express their gratitude to the old generation. The parents show their love for their children. Because the autumn is the time of the beginning of the new school year, so the adults and parents give gifts to the children. And the teenagers receive a lot of presents with many good luck wishes before the hard school time. The symbol PhD which is made from paper represents good wishes for success to pupils. For others, because the traditional time to have this festival is usually after harvesting the crops, it is as the congratulation for the full harvest.

Nowadays, although some of the traditional toys have been replaced by modern toys, the meaning and the performance has been kept and developed. It is certain that the Mid-Autumn day is important and famous for Vietnamese people. Everyone wants to join in it. And it really is a good example of the traditional culture of the Vietnamese.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Typhoons and floods bring with them a spectrum of health hazards, from electrocutions to snakebites, and from leptospirosis to food poisoning.

The Department of Health lists the following tips to help those experiencing the brunt of Super Typhoon Yolanda (international codename Haiyan) stay safe.

1. Don't leave the house unless absolutely necessary. Children should be prohibited from playing in the rain or flood to prevent contracting leptospirosis and other water-borne diseases.
2. With Yolanda's strong winds, those outdoors should watch out for flying objects or debris.
3. Do not use gas or electrical appliances that have been flooded.
4. Protect food and water from contaminants by keeping them in sealed containers. Food should be well-cooked.
5. To ensure that water is safe for drinking, boil it for 3 minutes or chlorinate it.
6. Stay away from places that will likely be inundated by rising water or waves such as beaches and riverbanks. Stay away from landslide-prone areas.
7. When evacuation is necessary, switch off your home's main power supply, place appliances and belongings on higher locations and close windows before leaving.
8. Wear warm and dry clothing.
9. Consult a doctor immediately once you or any member of your household shows symptoms of disease to prevent infecting others in the evacuation center. Common diseases or infections that spread in evacuation centers are coughs and colds, acute gastroenteritis, skin and eye infections, measles, dengue, leptospirosis and hepatitis A.
10. Properly dispose of all waste.
11. Wash your hands before and after eating and using the toilet.
12. Stay away from hanging wires and unstable structures (damaged houses, bridges, ports near rough waters, etc).

Around P15 million worth of assorted drugs and medicines, medical supplies, water and sanitation for health (WASH) kits, cot beds, family tents, and other emergency supplies are available in DOH regional offices in areas being battered by super typhoon Yolanda, said Health Secretary Enrique Ona on November 8, Friday.

These regional offices are Centers for Health Development VI (Western Visayas), VII (Central Visayas), and VIII (Eastern Visayas) and the DOH Manila central office.

Code Blue has been activated in all regions, meaning medical personnel in the regional offices will go on 24-hour duty. Ona also instructed hospitals to be on Code White, meaning their response teams must be on standby. – Rappler.com

I think the main festival in my country is Christmas, which is in late December. The main day that is celebrated in the UK is Christmas Day, on 25th December, though we also have the day off the following day, on Boxing Day, when many people visit friends and extended family.

I spent last Christmas with my family, and will also spend this one there too. We all get together at my parents’ house, because it is large enough to host everyone. On Christmas morning, we start preparing the meal, as it takes a long time to cook! We put the turkey or goose in the oven, and then some of us go to church for a Christmas mass. The rest of us stay behind to carry on cooking. At around midday, we gather round the Christmas tree, which is decorated with baubles, tinsel, and fairy lights and we open our presents, which are all placed under the tree the night before. After that we have our Christmas dinner, which is always the same meal as it is a traditional feast.

I love nearly everything about Christmas. There is a sense of anticipation and excitement in the period leading up to Christmas, and then during the festival itself families and friends spend time together and most people have time off work. One thing I don’t like about Christmas is that it is very commercialised and it can be stressful getting ready for it!

This festival is important for many people, even for non-Christians. Many non-Christian people in the UK enjoy the festive season without attaching any religious significance to it. It is our only national holiday involving resting, feasting and the giving of gifts, and I think such times nurture our souls.

This sample answer took around 2 minutes, which is the maximum time you need to speak for without stopping in Part 2 of the IELTS speaking exam. Now, take a look at this week’s Audio Word Study to learn some useful phrases and conversation techniques for the Christmas and New Year periods.
