People generally have one of two responses to snakes: either they find them totally repulsive, or they are
attracted to these smooth, silent, fast-moving creatures. Certain species of snake are poisonous and harmful to
humans, but there are many which are non-venomous and can easily be kept at home.
Snakes differ from other reptiles, such as lizards and alligators. Their well-developed system of muscles
enables them to move with amazing speed and agility, even though they have no legs.
They have no ears and do not hear sounds, but they are able to sense ground vibrations. Snakes have
limited vision, but they compensate for this with an excellent sense of smell. Their forked tongues pick up tiny
molecules in the air and these are then deposited and identified in a special structure in the mouth, known as
'Jacobson's organ'.
Strange as it may seem, some people keep snakes as pets. Raising a snake has a number of advantages.
Snakes require no special attention, and they don't need to be walked. They are normally quiet and remain
confined to their cages. Most adult snakes must be fed every 7-10 days. Snakes swallow their prey whole, thanks to
a uniquely-formed joint in their jaw which enables them to open their mouths amazingly wide. They digest their
food slowly and need to be in a state of rest during this period.
Studying snakes, or better still, keeping one at home, is an ideal way to overcome the primitive fears that
prevent many people from appreciating these fascinating animals.
