Table Manners
"Before you eat, say 'Thank you.' And don't talk with
your mouth full." These are some important basic table manners
you should consider while eating. However, every country has
their own set of rules. Let's take a look at some interesting table
manners in China, India, and Russia.
In China, people use chopsticks to eat instead of forks
and knives. There are several rules of etiquette regarding the use
of chopsticks. First, you should not use chopsticks to point at
someone. Also, don't bang the table with your chopsticks like
drumsticks. These types of behavior are considered impolite.
Lastly, never stick your chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice.
This indicates that the food is for the dead. When you are not
using your chopsticks, you should simply place them neatly on
the table.
Traditionally people in India enjoy many types of food
with their hands. So, you should wash your hands thoroughly
before and after eating. Also, having long fingernails is regarded
as unhygienic. When it comes to using your hands, there is an
important rule that you should keep in mind in India.
You should not use your left hand while eating or receiving
food. Indians traditionally use their left hand for hygienic cleaning
purposes. But this etiquette applies only to Indian food. In urban
areas, most Indians use forks and spoons to eat foreign cuisine
like Italian and Chinese food.
Generally, Russian table etiquette is not strict compared
with other countries. They use a fork in their left hand and a
knife in their right hand. But there are some customs that you
should remember when dining at someone's home in Russia.
You should not stare at another person's plate.
It is considered rude. Also, Russian people are very
famous for their hospitality to their guests. When you finish
your meal, it is polite to leave a little bit of food on your plate.
This shows your host has provided a sufficient amount of food
for you to eat.
