One interesting tradition in my country is the celebration of Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights. Diwali is a Hindu festival that symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor by people of all faiths across India.

During Diwali, people decorate their homes with colorful rangoli designs, light oil lamps called diyas, and burst fireworks to mark the occasion. Families come together to exchange gifts, share sweets, and feast on delicious traditional dishes. It is also a time for prayer and reflection, with many people visiting temples and seeking blessings for the year ahead.

One of the most iconic aspects of Diwali is the tradition of gambling, which is believed to bring good luck and prosperity in the coming year. People play card games and gamble with family and friends, adding to the festive atmosphere of the occasion.

Overall, Diwali is a time of joy, unity, and renewal, and it is a tradition that brings people together to celebrate the triumph of light and goodness in their lives.

Japan, the country in which I was born and bred, is not only a country of thousands of small islands (more than 4000 of them in addition to 4 large main islands, to be more precise) but also a country of rich culture and many interesting traditions! Today, here, I would like to talk about one of those traditions which we, the Japanese people, just love to observe!

The beautiful tradition, I am talking about, is popularly known as “Toro Nagashi” or the “festival of floating lanterns”. Celebrated during summertime (in the middle of July or August), in the evening when the sky goes dark, the beauty of numerous floating lanterns along a river or lake mesmerizes just about anybody and everybody.

Related to “Obon”, a 3-day period to honour all the departed souls, this unique tradition is observed by inscribing names, messages and drawings on the nicely-designed paper lanterns that are attached to a bamboo or wooded base. Then, of course, a candle is also placed inside the lantern before setting it to float alongside a river or lake. Often accompanied by music and fireworks, this festival gets even more colourful and interesting when the glowing and reflecting lights of thousands of lanterns drift alongside the boaters.

By the way, the tradition of “Toro Nagashi”, essentially a Buddhist festival, is observed all over Japan by people from all walks of life. Here it is worth mentioning that the lantern denotes a special symbol in Japanese culture. It represents love, brightness, and protection from evil.

Well, I get a rather special and certain sense of peace inside my heart about observing this tradition, mainly because it allows us to remember our forefathers and carry our love and gratitude to them. It also makes me feel happy as it brings all our families and friendstogether for a noble cause while also enjoying some quality time at the same time.

Well, I believe that traditions play a vital role in a country’s identity because of the fact that it could distinguish/differentiate between cultures. Even though I haven’t paid much attention to our country’s traditions since I was a kid, however there’s one tradition that is always in the back of my mind because of how special and intriguing it is for me. And that special tradition is “burning joss paper” and I can’t wait to elaborate it to you.

I have heard that this tradition lasts for thousand of years in East Asian culture, especially China and Vietnam. We always do this tradition in a specific date, which is on the 15th every month based on lunar calendar. As you may know, Asians attach greatest importance to family so we believe that burning joss paper is some kind of a ritual perform that showing respect to the dead, especially the ones in our family tree.

I have always find that tradition to be engrossing because of how unique it is, and the fact that it has a hidden meaning behind it is a plus that makes it even better to preserve and pass down to younger generations. However, there might be underlying reasons that this tradition has been criticized strongly by the West. It is because of the fact that this tradition caused polluted air and therefore take a toll on the environment. Frankly, we still want to preserve this tradition, but in the meantime, we also want to do something to reduce the impact it has made to the environment.

One interesting tradition in my country is the celebration of Lunar New Year, also known as Tet. Tet is the most important holiday in Vietnam and is a time for families to come together, honor their ancestors, and welcome the new year with hope and good fortune. During Tet, families clean and decorate their homes, prepare special foods, and visit relatives and friends to exchange well wishes and gifts. There are also many traditional customs and rituals associated with Tet, such as giving lucky money to children, offering prayers at the family altar, and lighting firecrackers to ward off evil spirits. One of the most iconic symbols of Tet is the Tet tree, a small kumquat tree decorated with red envelopes, flowers, and other auspicious items. The Tet tree is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the household in the new year. Overall, Tet is a time of joy, renewal, and reflection in Vietnam, and it is a tradition that is deeply rooted in our culture and history. It is a time for us to celebrate our heritage, strengthen family bonds, and look forward to a bright future ahead.
