This is an annual festival that takes place for 2 weeks from October 1st to October 14th. At the festival, lanterns are lit all along the Jinju Namgang River. They have diversified shapes such as people, houses, gardens all of which are recreating the daily life of the people of Kim chi. It is held to honour and commemorate the thousands of Koreans who sacrificed their lives during the Japanese invasion in the late 16th century. During the Jinjuseong battle of 1592, lanterns were used as a means of communicating with reserve forces and also a way to keep in touch with family members living outside Jinjuseong Castle. The highlight of the festival is the lantern drop along the Namgang River carrying people’s wishes. In addition to floating lanterns on the Namgang River, there are many other cultural activities such as watching water music performances, experiencing folk games and watching outdoor plays for free.
