Black Friday and Cyber Monday promote mindless consumption, excessive packaging, and shipping waste, especially with returns of unwanted items. This mindset also contributes to the movement of Earth Overshoot Day, which marks the point when humanity has used more resources than the planet can regenerate in a year.
The logistics and cost of returning items, especially in industries like fashion, add to the environmental impact. In the clothing industry, many online returns are sent to landfills because the return process is too complicated or expensive. Britons throw away approximately 300,000 tonnes of clothes every year, many of which have only been worn a handful of times.
Much of this waste is from fast fashion, which is often worn only for a single season. The negative impacts of Black Friday go beyond clothes, as they also contribute to the generation of e-waste, non-recyclable toys (mostly plastic), and more. In fact, some countries, like France, are considering banning Black Friday because of its environmental toll and the promotion of unsustainable consumption habits.
