My maternal grandma worked part-time as a dinner lady while her children were at home — so she would be there when they left for school and when they came home — then was a receptionist. I remember her working behind the desk of the swimming pool. She's now retired, and has a more thriving social life than me.
My maternal grandad worked in the factory for what was originally Hawker Siddeley, manufacturing aircraft, and continued working there after it became British Aerospace/BAe. He worked at the factory at Brough until he went into hospice with lung cancer when I was little, and died when I was four.
My paternal grandma, my nana, was a nurse for the NHS. She used to live in St Andrews, in Scotland, but relocated first to Coventry when my dad was about three and then to Hull when he was seven. I never remember her working — I'm not sure whether she had retired or whether it was medical retirement because of her COPD. She passed away in hospice when I was about ten.
I don't actually know what my paternal grandfather did. He died when my dad was eighteen — before he met my mum and long before I was born. I should probably ask at some point.
