Unique Public Transportation
in the World
How do you get to places? Many Chinese people choose
to ride bicycles and people in Jordan sometimes ride on camels
to get around in the desert. People living in big cities may use the
bus, taxi, or the subway. While some types will be familiar, others
may seem unusual to you. Let's find out how people get around.
Red double-decker buses are symbolic of London,
They are used by both citizens and tourists. People of all ages enjoy
sitting on the top deck of the vehicle to sightsee. In the past, people
in London used horse-drawn coaches as public transportation.
Some of them were double-decker coaches. The Underground,
or the Tube, is another important mode of transportation in the city.
The London Tube, which opened in 1863, is actually the oldest
underground subway in the world. Although it is very old, it is still
very popular, withover a billion passengers taking the subway
every year.

Buses and trains are the most common form of public
transportation in India. But in most Indian cities you can see
people driving around in a unique vehide. This vehicle is called
the cycle-rickshaw. It looks like a bicycle, but it has three wheels
and it has enough seats for two or three passengers in the back.
It is fun for the passengers, but the driver must use
a lot of leg power. Unfortunately, they are being replaced by other
public transportation such as buses and taxis.
However, many Indians still use the cycle rickshaw to get arounds
For centuries, dog sleds have been used for transportation
in Alaska. That's because they have lots of snow and few roads.
However, these days they are becoming less and less available.
Various snow vehicles, like the snowmobile, have replaced the dog
sled. Dog sleds are mainly used for leisure now. One of the best
examples is the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race which started in 1973.
Fifty racers and thousands of dogs travel nearly 2,000
kilometers through subzero blizzards and wilderness for nine to
fifteen days. The racers' love for dog sledding help to make sure
that it will never completely die out.
