Armstrong had an interest in flying and wanted to be a pilot at an early age. When he was five years old, he
first went on an airplane. He could fly a plane before he could drive a car. He got his pilot's license at the age of
fifteen. He could fly over 200 different types of aircraft such as helicopters, jets, gliders and rockets. His father took
him on an airplane called a Ford Trimotor (also known as the "Tin Goose").
In 1947, he began his studies in aeronautical engineering at Purdue University on a U.S Navy scholarship.
A few years later, he became a test pilot at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.
Armstrong joined the NASA Astronaut Corps in the second group, which was selected in 1962. He made
his first spaceflight as command pilot of Gemini 8 in March 1966, becoming NASA's first civilian astronaut to fly
in space.
On July 20, 1969, Armstrong and Apollo 11 Lunar Module (LM) pilot Buzz Aldrin became the first people
to land on the Moon, and the next day they spent two and a half hours walking on the moon. When Armstrong
stepped onto the lunar surface, he famously said: "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."
They returned to the lunar module that on July 24th, they returned to Earth and landed in the Pacific Ocean.
Armstrong resigned from the United States astronaut program in 1970. After his career as an astronaut, he
became a professor of aerospace engineering at the University Cincinnati and served as the chairman of the board of
Computing Technologies for Aviation, a company that develops software for fight scheduling. Armstrong died at
the age of 82.
