A. I don’t know when it started. Things used to be good between us when I was younger. I loved being with them, and we went everywhere together when they weren’t working. Perhaps they didn’t want me to grow up and become independent. I don’t know. But every time I see either of them now for a few minutes, it turns into an argument. I used to respect them, but now I don’t feel that way.

B. My mother and father are more like friends to me now than parents. At one time, they were always nagging me, but looking back, I think that was my fault really. I just wanted to be out with my friends. I was selfish and didn’t have a good attitude at home. But one day, I thought, ‘This is awful! I must change my behaviour.’ So I tried really hard to be different, and guess what, the way they started to behave towards me started to improve. It’s great now.

C. I hardly see my mother and father anymore, but when I do, it’s OK. I moved out of the family home when I was 16. I didn’t have any problems with them or anything like that, and we never had arguments. But they were so old-fashioned in their attitudes that we had nothing to say to each other. I wanted to be independent and become responsible for my own decisions. There was no way I could do that in the family home with my parents’ attitudes.
