Located 70km to the northwest of downtown Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels take visitors back to the years of hardship yet also full of heroism of the nation. Although travelers may have heard a lot about the tunnels, it is not until they come here and see it with their own eyes that they can fully appreciate the uniqueness and interest of this steel land.
The Cu Chi Tunnels do not possess the magnificent stature of ancient wonders like the Pyramids, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, or Angkor Wat, but it is a monumental construction with over 200km of tunnels sprawling like a spider’s web underground. Here truly is a unique wonder of war. It embodies the profound depths of hatred and the resilient, unyielding spirit of the "steel land," one of the brilliant symbols of the heroism of the Vietnamese people.
However, the real stories from the tunnels surpass human imagination. Just by crawling through a segment of the tunnel, you will understand why tiny Vietnam could triumph over a larger and wealthier enemy. Here, one can grasp how Cu Chi, a poor land, was able to confront for 21 continuous years a vastly outnumbering, battle-hardened army equipped with modern and advanced weapons and machinery. In this seemingly imbalanced confrontation, the people of Cu Chi achieved a glorious victory.
Leaving the tunnels, you will arrive at the Ben Duoc Memorial. Admire the three-arch gate, the stele house, the nine-story tower, and the main shrine with its beautiful traditional architecture harmonizing with nature. Particularly noteworthy is the Memorial for soldiers and compatriots, which features an architecture unique to the nation, modern and solemn. Within the memorial, the names of 44,357 fallen soldiers who died on the battlefield of Saigon - Cholon - Gia Dinh during the liberation struggles to protect the homeland and fulfill international duties are inscribed on over 632 slabs of granite. In front of the memorial, there is a stone inscription by poet Vien Phuong. The Ben Duoc Memorial is a distinctive construction of the historic site, built from the heartfelt aspirations of officials, soldiers, and the people of the nation, reflecting the Vietnamese tradition of "drinking water and remembering its source." With the value and significance of its achievements forged by the blood and efforts of thousands of soldiers and compatriots, the Cu Chi tunnel base has been recognized as a National Historical and Cultural Monument by the Ministry of Culture and Information.
Not only can you visit the historical site, but you can also practice shooting and enjoy special dishes of Cu Chi at the Cu Chi Tunnels restaurant, set in a breezy location by the poetic Saigon River. Leaving the Cu Chi Tunnels, you will undoubtedly carry with you many feelings. It is the admiration for the intelligence, flexibility, and creativity of the people of Cu Chi in designing the tunnel system; the delight in acting as a soldier, firing real weapons, and moreover, the emotion felt in paying homage to the heroes who fell for today's independence and freedom... These are the historical values that will be deeply imprinted in the hearts of those who have ever visited the Cu Chi Tunnels.
