This is a typical day in the life of me!
  1. “After my shower, I throw on some clothes.”
I’m quite a busy person so in the morning I don’t usually have time to think too much about what i’m going to wear. I usually just throw on some clothes.
“Throw on” something means to quickly put on your clothes.
2. “After meditating, I quickly whip up some breakfast”
As you can see, I move quite fast in the morning! (Even though I do take some time to meditate, most mornings). When I say I “whip up” my breakfast it means I prepare something to eat very quickly. I don’t spend too much time making my breakfast.
3. “Then I go over my emails and ‘to do list’ for the day”
This is a very common phrasal verb in daily life – ‘go over’. This means that I check or review my emails and things that I need to do for the day.
4. “I usually have quite a lot of work to catch up on”
I often have newsletters or blog articles to write, videos to make or edit or students to attend to – so I need to catch up on all this.
“Catch up on” something means to do work that you haven’t had time to do before.
5. “I often have to sort out some technical problems with my website”
When you work a lot with computers and websites, it’s very common to have technical hiccups (small delays or problems). So I have to sort these out before I start my classes.
To sort out something (or sort something out) means to deal successfully with a problem or situation and find a solution.
6. “At lunch time I often head out to a cafe or go to the gym”
I like to break up my day (this means break my normal routine) by going somewhere for a coffee or lunch or a walk. We often say “head out” to mean simply ‘go outside” or go somewhere nearby such as the shops, the park, a bar or to meet a friend.
7. “After dinner I like to chill out on the sofa”
I work pretty hard during the day so at night I like to take some time to chill out. To ‘chill out’ simply means to rest and relax after a period of hard work.
8. “Sometimes I meet up with a friend for a coffee or go to a movie”
I think it’s important to take a break from work and meet up with friends to stay connected.
It’s very common to say “meet up with” when we talk about social meetings with friends.
We don’t usually say ‘meet my friend’. “Meet” is more formal. So we often use this in a business context. “To meet someone” also usually means the first time you are introduced to someone.
9. “In the evenings I like to check out any new TV shows or movies on Netflix or iTunes”
I’m also an actor and a big fan of movies, so I like to spend some time checking out any new releases or actor interviews. This phrasal verb is one of the most common and i’m sure you’ve heard it. It means to take a look or try something for the first time to see if you like it.
10. “I take some time to wind down in the evening”
It sounds like I do a lot of relaxing! But before I go to sleep it’s important for me to wind down. This means that I relax after a period of intense activity. We can also say “unwind”, which means the same.
So, now you know my basic daily routine! And 10 common phrasal verbs that I use all the time (and many other native speakers use)
