III. READING

A. Read the passages and then decide whether the following statements are True (T) or False (F).

Part 1

Have you ever seen a water puppet show ? It is so special and fantastic. It’s a unique Vietnamese tradition. Children love the performance, and tourists who come to Viet Nam greatly enjoy this kind of art. Water puppetry is a traditional art form. It began in the 11th century. It originated in the villages of the Red River Delta of North Viet Nam. The show is performed in a pool. The puppets are supported by strings under the water and controlled by the puppeteers behind a screen, so they appear to be moving on the water. The puppets are made of weed and then painted. The themes of the puppet shows are rural : the performances show everyday life in the countryside and folk tales. There are stories about rice farming, fishing and Vietnamese village festivals.

1.  Puppet show a common Vietnamese tradition.

2. Water puppetry began 5 hundreds years ago.

3. The puppets move with the help of strings under the water only.

4. The themes of the puppet shows are stories about the countryside.

Part 2.

Among the many special dishes in Ha Noi, Pho is the most popular. It is a special kind of Vietnamese soup. We can enjoy Pho for all kinds of meals during the day, from breakfast to dinner, and even for a late night snack. Pho has a very special taste. The rice noodles are made from the best variety of rice. The broth for pho bo (beef noodle soup) is made by stewing the bones of cows for a long time in a large pot. The broth for another kind of Pho, Pho ga (chicken noodle soup) is made by stewing chicken bones. The chicken meat served with Pho ga is boneless and cut into thin slices . . . It's so delicious!

1. Among the many special dishes in Ha Noi, nothing is as popular as Pho.

2.  People can enjoy Pho from breakfast to dinner, and even for a late night snack.

3. Both the broth for pho bo (beef noodle soup) and pho ga (chicken noodle soup) made are made by stewing chicken bones

4. Pho ga is served with thin boneless slices on the top.

Part 1: Water Puppet Show
False (F): The passage states it is a unique Vietnamese tradition, implying it's not common in other places.
False (F): The passage says it began in the 11th century, which is over 900 years ago, not 500.
False (F): The passage says the puppets are supported by strings under the water and controlled by puppeteers behind a screen. It doesn't say "only" under the water. The screen is also crucial.
True (T): The passage explicitly states that the themes are rural and show everyday life in the countryside and folk tales.
Part 2: Pho
True (T): The passage says "Among the many special dishes in Ha Noi, Pho is the most popular," which is equivalent to saying nothing is as popular.
True (T): The passage directly states, "We can enjoy Pho for all kinds of meals during the day, from breakfast to dinner, and even for a late night snack."
False (F): The passage says the broth for pho bo is made from cow bones, while the broth for pho ga is made from chicken bones.
True (T): The passage says, "The chicken meat served with Pho ga is boneless and cut into thin slices." The phrase "on the top" is implied as that's how meat is usually served in pho.
