Son Doong Cave in Son Trach Commune, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, is the largest natural cave in the world. The name ‘‘Son Doong’’ was created by combining the pre-existing placename ‘‘Doong’’ with the Sino-Vietnamese word ‘‘son’’ (meaning mountain). Near the front door of Son Doong cave is Doong village.
Son Doong Cave was formed about 2-5 million years ago. As river water flows through the limestone area, the water erodes the limestone over millions of years, creating a huge cave system. The cave has a width of 150m, a height of more than 200m, a length of up to nearly 9km. The capacity of Son Doong cave is about 91.44m, the dome is nearly 244m high - containing a 40-storey building and stalactite columns up to 70m high. In the cave there is an underground river 2.5km long. The cave has two ''skylights'', bringing sunlight in, creating conditions for trees to grow like a rainforest in the cave.
In 2014, the New York Times ranked Son Doong cave at number 8 out of more than 50 places on the list of tourist destinations that should be visited.
In May 2016, the ambassadors of Argentina, Switzerland, Italy, the UK, Australia, the Czech Republic, the assistant secretary of state of the United States of America organized a tour to explore Son Doong cave and witnessed the magnificent beauty of Son Doong cave. .
