According to a study by Exeter University, coastal residents are happier than people who live inland. The research 9 analysed the data of more than 26,000 people and found a link between their happiness and the natural environment. Those who lived within one kilometer of the coast were 22% less likely to have mental health problems compared to those 10 who lived over 50 kilometers away. The study also found that 11 despite their poorer earnings, households that lived close to the coast experienced fewer 12 cases of anxiety disorders. 13 The researchers concluded that the coast may act as a "protective zone" for mental wellbeing. It seemed in terms of mental health, this "protective zone" could narrow the gap between those on high and low 14 income. 15 Thus, an important role in 15 maintaining an important role in mental wellbeing.
