Rock 'n' roll was born in the U.S.
in the 1950s. It was a mix of blues
and country music. Elvis Presley
was the first rock 'n' roll superstar.
Soon rock 'n' roll was popular in
other countries. A British band,
The Beatles, was world famous in
the 1960s. Their music was very
influential on modern pop
and rock.
The Clash, and The Ramones
were important punk bands.
The 1980s was the period of
stadium rock. Its superstars
were Bruce Springsteen, Queen,
and U2. Their concerts were in
enormous stadiums. In 1981
there were 130,000 people at the
Queen concert in the Maracanã
Stadium in Rio de Janeiro!
Hip-hop is a popular music style
today. Beyoncé and Jay-Z are
popular hip-hop superstars.
In the 1970s, rock music, with
bands like Pink Floyd and Led
Zeppelin, was very popular. For
some people these groups were
too serious, and so glam rock
(short for "glamorous") was born.
David Bowie and Elton John were
its leaders. Elton John was
famous for his incredible
clothes and crazy glasses.
In 1976, punk rock, a type
of rebellious rock music,
was born in the U.K. and
